The colossal buzz surrounding the three Fifty Shades books grew to new proportions with the announcement of a film adaptation. Each step of the production process has grabbed headlines, from casting announcements to release dates. But over the past few days, it's the trailer for the new movie that has taken the web by storm.

In spite of being relatively tame considering the subject matter, the first trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey has crossed the 36 million views mark on YouTube, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

This places the video atop the ranking of 2014 trailers that have scored the most views during the week following their release, ahead of the previous winners Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Fifty Shades of Grey will be released in US theaters on February 14, 2015.
