At Rs 41.7 cr, Spider-Man 2 is biggest Hollywood opener in India

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has registered the highest ever opening day gross for any Hollywood film in India. In fact, it has also found a place in the top hits of this year and is giving competition to the likes of Gunday, 2 States and Jai Ho in terms of domestic collections.

With a stupendous collection of Rs 41.7 crore in India in four days since its release on Thursday, the Spider-Man sequel has indeed proved to be amazing at the domestic box office.

According to Sony Pictures India, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has registered the highest ever opening day gross for any Hollywood title in the country. In fact, it has also found a place in the top hits of this year and is giving competition to the likes of Gunday, 2 States and even the Salman Khan- starrer Jai Ho.

While 2 States made Rs 38 crore in three days, Gunday made Rs 43.9 crore in the opening weekend.

The Amazing Spider-Man had minted Rs. 34 crore during its opening weekend in 2012, beating the record earlier set by Avatar.

Internationally, of course, the film has made megabucks but still did not do as well as expected. The film earned $91.6 million debut in North America. Studios released their final box office numbers from the weekend Monday, and Sony's second installment of its second Spider-Man series performed solidly if not spectacularly.

Directed by Marc Webb, the movie hit the screens May 1 in India. The film stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

The film was released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in a total number of 1,523 screens.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2 once again consolidates Spider-Man's position as a franchise that cannot be beaten. We are happy to say that the film garnered unprecedented buzz in the weeks before release," said Kercy Daruwala, managing director, Sony Pictures India.

Sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have already been announced for release in 2016 and 2018.
