Having wielded the megaphone for a zombie film, comic book adaptation and an animated owl story, director Zack Snyder says that with his latest flick, Sucker Punch, he vowed to grow over gender specific outings.
“I vowed never to have just one gender in a movie and sort of hopscotch genders, if at all possible. No, I’m kidding. It really just worked out that this story happened to be about these girls. So, it wasn’t anything where I was, ‘Oh, I’ve been around men too much. I’ve got to make a movie with only women in it’,” he says.
Sucker Punch follows a group of girls trapped in an asylum who use their imaginations to escape their dark reality. Snyder, 45, made the girls undergo rigorous training sessions before letting them start filming.
“What they were doing was just every day going to train, go to the gym, shoot a gun, go to bed and wake up and do it again. I hope that their experiences together in that setting had an influence on the movie itself,” says the filmmaker, who has helmed successful ventures like Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
Not many know that Snyder pulled out of his decision to convert Sucker Punch into 3D at the very last minute. “We were considering going 3D. But we had seen a bunch of tests and conversion didn’t sit with me that great,” he says.
