In the Spotlight: US critics name their best movies of the year

US National Society of Film Critics named journalism drama Spotlight the best film of the year at their annual awards. Michael B Jordan and Charlotte Rampling took home major acting awards for Creed and 45 Years respectively.

The year’s best movies according to the US National Society of Film Critics.

Investigative journalism drama Spotlight was named the best picture by the US National Society Of Film Critics.

The acclaimed film, starring Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, was also awarded the best screenplay honour for writers Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy, reported CBS.

The movie was previously awarded best picture by critics in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, among others, and is considered a top contender at this year’s Academy Awards.

Charlotte Rampling and Michael B Jordan won best actress and best actor respectively.

Creed star Michael B Jordan was named best actor and British star Charlotte Rampling was honoured as best actress for her role in 45 Years, while supporting actor awards went to Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Kristen Stewart (Clouds of Sils Maria).

Asif Kapadia’s Amy won best documentary.

Lesbian drama Carol scored best cinematography and best director (Todd Haynes), while Amy Winehouse documentary Amy was named the best non-fiction film at the organisation’s 50th annual awards, which took place in New York.
