Her character in the movie, which details the African-American maid's point of view about the white families for which they work and the hardships they go through on a daily basis, was called Minny.

The actress was overwhelmed with the award.

Spencer's competition in the category included Berenice Bejo (The Artist), Jessica Chastain (The Help), Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants).
