Actor Anil Kapoor, who wanted to remake Mrs Doubtfire, regrets the loss of the Hollywood star who committed suicide on Sunday.
It’s a huge loss. A friend, Rodney Charters (cinematographer in Hollywood) — who is currently in the city — and I have been talking about Robin ever since we heard the news. He loved cinema, and loved working.

In fact, Rodney was just telling me about this one time when a TV crew was shooting near Robin’s house. He wasn’t part of the shoot, but after a point, he couldn’t resist joining the crew. He sat with them and kept the unit in splits all through. He was so passionate about life.
Also, if you notice, whatever Robin Williams has done in his career, as an actor and even as a comedian, he has done with a streak of sadness — be it his role in Mrs Doubtfire (1993) or Dead Poets Society (1989). I don’t know what must have dragged him to this point.
I was always keen on doing a remake of Mrs Doubtfire. So I tried to buy the rights, but I couldn’t. I am glad I had a brush with a similar part in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate (1998). Later, even Kamal Haasan did a similar role in Chachi 420 (1997), but, of course, no one could do it as well as Robin.
