The lawns of the Embassy of Italy transformed into a cultural hotspot on Friday evening as the Capital’s elite gathered to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic (officially falling on June 2).
The evening kicked off with a series of speeches from the host, the Ambassador of India to Italy, Antonio Bartoli and the evening's Chief Guest, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, Suressh Gopi.
Showing his deep love for Italian craftsmanship, Gopi shared a personal fashion anecdote, sharing:
"During my visit to Italy, I was also encouraged to explore the local shops, because Italy is, after all, world-famous for its fashion. I visited Salvatore Ferragamo and bought a few items—in fact, the very piece I am wearing today is a Ferragamo. Standing here at this celebration, wearing it, fills me with pride. Ferragamo, as many of you know, also reminds us of the iconic wardrobe of the legendary Sophia Loren. I am sure you all know that beautiful history."
Commenting on the viral 'Melodi' moment: The ambassador shared with us, "I believe their recent meeting marked the eighth time they have come together. But what is truly important is that this friendship and political chemistry corresponds with a deep, objective convergence of interests. There is an equally strong chemistry between our two countries because our strategic goals align so perfectly. On top of that, we are two ancient cultures with a mutual desire to boost tourism. We have found a tremendous amount of common ground. We can continue to nurture this partnership with fruitful collaboration."

{{/usCountry}}Following the official addresses, the diplomatic gathering took an incredibly fun, filmy turn. Guests cheered as a spectacular Bollywood dance show took over the stage. The Ambassador's wife, Ester, along with her group hit the dance floor in an Indian attire, dancing to desi tunes like Sapphire and Gallan Goodiyan.
Spilling the tea on her dance and Indian attire, she shared:
“We have a teacher, Manju, who is Indian and wonderful, teaches us Bollywood dance. I've been doing it now for about seven or eight months. I love dancing, and I really love Bollywood style. But more than anything, I just love India and its culture. I truly think Italians and Indians are similar in so many ways—our music, our love for good food, and our values around friendship and family. Family is deeply important to both of our cultures. Because of that, both my husband and I feel completely at home here in India.”
No Italian celebration is complete without its culinary heritage. Guests were treated to an authentic spread featuring dishes like risotto, pastas, salads, and layers of decadent tiramisu.
Adding to the rich auditory experience was Mezzotono, the renowned Italian vocal masters who brought complex, beautiful harmonies to the capital. Meanwhile, a captivating live performance by Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo (TTB), one of Italy's longest-running and most celebrated laboratory and group theaters—wrapped the evening in true, artistic Italian grandeur.
