11,942 students take admission to IITs, 16% are female candidates

This year on the directions of the ministry, IIT Kanpur had released an extended merit list for JEE Advanced exam held on June 15, making more students eligible.

A total of 11,942 students have taken admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) after the seventh round of counselling.

After the final round across 23 IITs, a total of 11942 students—10,101 male and 1841 female students have taken admission. According to persons familiar with the developments the number of girls in IIT has reached almost 16%.

Though a senior official said 140 seats were vacant after the final round as the IITs had created supernumerary seats for female candidates, IIT Kanpur denied it.

“A total of 11279 seats were offered and more than that has been accepted by the students so there is no question of seats going vacant,” said an official from IIT Kanpur.

According to the HRD ministry’s plans which were announced in January this year, the number of supernumerary seats for girls in these institutions was hiked to ensure that the number of students in each campus was at least 14%. As per provisions, total supernumerary seats created cannot exceed 10% of the total seats being offered in the IITs.

In IIT Delhi for instance a total of 912 admissions have taken place as against 851 seats of which 59 are supernumerary seats for women, officials said.

Last year, the number of vacancies after seven rounds of counselling stood at 121 up from 96 in 2016, 50 in 2015, and three in 2014.
