The deceased was identified by the police as Premanand Bhatra of Suaniguda village. Police said he was playing with other children at the Gandhinagar Sevashram School under Kotpad police limits when the structure fell.

Staff members and local residents rescued the children and rushed them to the SLN Medical College and Hospital, where Bhatra was declared dead. The condition of the other injured student remains critical.

The incident sparked a massive protest by activists of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Led by former Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Kumar Majhi and former minister Padmini Dian, agitators blocked National Highway 63 by placing the child’s body on the road. The protest led to a major traffic snarl, prompting senior district administration and police officials to rush to the spot to pacify the crowd.
