Ambedkar statues damaged in UP’s Ghazipur, Jaunpur

Over half-a-dozen incidents of Ambedkar’s statues being vandalised have taken place in various parts of the state over the last one month.

The statues of Dalit icon Dr BR Ambedkar were damaged in Jaunpur and Ghazipur late on Thursday night, police said, adding that a case has been registered against unidentified persons.

According to the police, miscreants broke a statue in Gajana village in Gaurabadashahpur police station area of Jaunpur. It was spotted by locals who informed the police.

Station officer Uday Pratap Singh reached the spot and interacted with the locals and a new statue was put up in the same place in the presence of police.

Singh said a case had been registered in this connection against an unidentified person following a complaint by locals.

In Ghazipur, a finger of Ambedkar’s statue in Chakdaut village under Birno police station was broken. Police called a mason and got the statue repaired. They also registered a complaint in this regard.

Only a day ago, the police had sounded an alert across Uttar Pradesh for possible attempts to damage the statues of the Dalit stalwart and the chief architect of India’s constitution ahead of his birth anniversary on April 14.
