Barpeta district commissioner’s office said Sarkar submitted two sets of nomination papers for the seat reserved for the scheduled caste (SC). Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had complained of irregularities in Sarkar’s papers.

Dipak Kumar Das (AGP) and two independents, Uddhab Das and Gagan Chandra Haloi, now remain in the fray in Barpeta with the rejection of Sarkar’s papers.

AGP leader Apurba Bhattacharjee said his party has won Barpeta in the past. “It appears that our candidate will win this seat this time. We will consider it as the people’s blessings and the first step towards building a strong and developed Assam.”

In 2021, Congress’s Abdur Rahim Ahmed won the seat. Following the 2023 delimitation, Barpeta was declared an SC reserved seat.

The state election commission said the scrutiny of nomination papers for all 126 assembly constituencies was completed on Wednesday. As many as 815 candidates filed 1,389 nomination papers across 126 seats. After completion of scrutiny, papers of 789 candidates were found valid. Thursday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations.
