Bordoloi was in charge of the party’s manifesto committee for the elections scheduled to be held on April 9.

In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi said he was quitting from all posts and primary membership of the party.

“With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and primary membership of the Indian National Congress,” he said in his brief communication.

HT has reviewed the letter.

Bordoloi, a two-time MP from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, had served as minister in the Tarun Gogoi governments from 2001 to 2016.

Last month, former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah quit the party and joined the ruling BJP.

Just before the news of Bordoloi’s resignation, Assam chief minister had said: “I have not had any interaction with Bordoloi but he is welcome to join our party.”
