One killed, 6 feared trapped as building collapses in Gujarat’s Vadodara

The accident happened in Chhani area of Vadodara where labourers were bringing down the old four-storey building that belongs to engineering firm Larsen & Toubro.

One person was killed and two others were injured as a building collapsed in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Saturday. At least six labourers are still feared trapped inside the building that was being demolished as per orders of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, officials said.

The accident happened in Chhani area of Vadodara where labourers were bringing down the old four-storey building that belongs to engineering firm Larsen & Toubro.

The front portion of the vacant building collapsed when workers were engaged in the demolition process, Vadodara Municipal Commissioner NB Upadhyay said .

“The dilapidated building was not safe. It was served notice by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation,” he added said.

The building collapsed around 3 pm. Search and rescue operation for the six trapped labourers was still on.

“The fire brigade team, police and senior VMC officials are on the spot with the latest equipment to save lives,” said Vadodara Mayor Dr Jigeeshaben Sheth.

The fire brigade maintained that the collapsed front portion of the building down has blocked the way to rest of the building, known as old L&T building.
