The Centre has begun procurement or purchases of kharif or summer-sown rice, fixing a target of 46.34 million tonnes for the 2025-26 season, an official said, signalling robust harvests, which will help put a lid on inflation.

The Food Corporation of India buys nearly half of India’s rice crop and as on October 20, 2025, the Centre had 66.5 million tonnes of food grains in its stocks, including those in transit, which are double the required 30.4 million tonnes that the government needs to keep for food security.

Of this, wheat in the Centre’s possession stands at 31 million tonnes against a mandatory requirement of 20 million tonnes. The government also has 35 million tonnes of rice against a required 10 million tonnes.

The procurement target is 4.45% lower than the 48.5 million tonnes target fixed for the 2024-25 season. The government has also targeted to purchase 1.91 million tonnes of millets to help farmers diversify their choice of crops.
