Armed with the official data, the Congress on Monday debunked the BJP-led NDA government’s claims on achieving its targets on various fronts, including LPG connections and deletion of fake ration cards.
“This can be called a Non Disclosing Alliance and Bharatiya Jhoot Party,” party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said. “We have seen this is a sarkar (government) of exaggeration, misrepresentation and self drum beating based on non-existing facts.”
Citing the information based on an official press release in January and the statement by petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the main opposition party attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government for making “tall” claims.
“PM said 3 core new LPG connections have been provided. The fact is that only 60 lakh new connections were provided till April 2015,” Singhvi said. “Similarly, the PM said 1.65 fake ration cards have been deleted. But only 66 lakh cards have been deleted in last 3 years. According to the government, 1.2 crore fake cards were deleted in 2012-14.”
Singhvi insisted that the PM had said that Rs 15,000 cr were saved on LPG subsidies. But for the past two years, the savings on cash transfer for LPG subsidies were only Rs 143 crore.
On Jan Dhan scheme, Singhvi said the government maintained that 20 crore bank accounts were opened in first 100 days but the actual number is 8.6 crore, which is 40% less than claimed by the ruling side.
“Modiji presides over a government of great event management skills. But when facts are ignored, such event management becomes hollow,” the Congress leader said. “We are careful with our facts. We don’t beat our own drums.”
