A Congress worker was arrested in Rajasthan’s Ajmer on Thursday night for an allegedly abusive post against Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and her parents on Facebook, triggering protests.

Additional police superintendent Himanshu Jangid said the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit lodged a complaint against Piyush Surana. He added that BJP workers threw ink on him before police intervened to control the situation and prevent escalation.
Jangid said the local Congress unit has lodged a case over the ink throwing inside a police station. “Police are investigating the matter.”
Police said the accused claimed that his social media account was hacked and denied intentionally posting any objectionable content.
Local Congress leader Rajkumar Jaipal said Surana was the local IT cell in-charge of the party and does not hold any post currently. “What was posted was not correct.”
Police urged political workers to maintain peace and avoid provocative actions on social media.
