A police naik, who was driving under the influence of alcohol and rammed his vehicle into a bike near Lalbaug flyover on Monday, was suspended from service on Wednesday.

Deputy commissioner of police, zone 4 Saurabh Tripathi confirmed the development. “Police naik Rajesh Shelke, attached to the Kalachowki police station, has been suspended from service. A departmental inquiry is underway,” he said.
The biker, Imtiyaz Shaikh, works as a delivery boy. On the day of the incident, he was on his way to deliver food when the police jeep Shelke was driving rammed into him, said police. Shaikh suffered injuries on his leg and was admitted to KEM Hospital. A crowd gathered at the spot and took videos of the scene. A video, showing Shelke in an inebriated state, went viral on Monday night. He was taken to the police station and underwent tests.
He was booked and arrested by Kalachowki police station for rash and negligent driving. He was later let out on bail. After preliminary probe established that Shelke was drunk, he was suspended. “His act maligned the image of police department in the society and such conduct cannot be tolerated,” a police officer said.
