A militant was killed in an ongoing gunfight between security forces and militants in north Kashmir’s Handwara area of Kupwara district on Tuesday, army said.
In a tweet, army’s Chinar Corps said that one militant was killed in Handwara’s Haphruda and the operation was still in progress.
Police control room Handwara informed that a cordon and search operation was launched in Hangikoot forest area of Wilgam in Handwara in the morning.
“Reportedly an encounter has ensued. Since the area is very remote and communication network is very weak, we can’t say with surety what is the latest update,” an official manning PCR Handwara said.
SP Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani did not pick up his phone.
On August 16, a Lashkar-e-Taiba district commander was killed in a gun fight with security forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
On August 13, three Hizbul Muajhideen militants including the outfit’s operational commander Yasin Itoo alias Mehmood Ghaznavi were killed in a gunbattle. Two soldiers also died in that encounter.
Kashmir has been witnessing vigorous anti-insurgency operations by security forces in the past few months particularly after increase in militant activities following the killing of HM commander Burhan Wani in July last year.
Since July 30 alone, the security forces have killed 23 militants (excluding today’s encounter) in various gun battles including five infiltrators who were gunned down along the LoC by the army in Machil sector on August 7.
