In a notification issued by Gauhati University registrar S K Nath on Saturday, the three students - Milton Handique, Rejaul Karim and Writtick Saikia - were allowed to appear in their onging examinations.

“As directed by the Vice Chancellor, GU, it is hereby informed to all concerned that the students... who were expelled vide notification, dated May 26, 2016, issued by the office of the Secretary, University Classes, are hereby allowed to appear in the respective forthcoming examinations.

“It is hereby also notified that the earlier expulsion notification stands cancelled,” the order said.

Earlier, Handique was expelled permanently, while Karim and Saikia were thrown out of the university for a year.

Handique and Karim are students of LLB sixth semester and Saikia is from fourth semester of Communication and Journalism.

When the expulsion order was handed over to him, Handique fell ill due to shock and started vomiting. His friends admitted him to a private hospital and he underwent treatment in the ICU.

Accordingly, the Residence, Health and Discipline Board, which conducted the inquiry into the students’ alleged activities which they said was “detrimental to the university, amounting to indiscipline,” met on June 2 and decided to revoke the order.

The University also announced that it would bear Handique’s treatment expenses.
