Kashmir: Militants cornered, encounter continues in Srinagar outskirts

There have been sporadic fire near Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar where security forces have cornered militants who are suspected to have killed a CRPF officer on Saturday.

The gun battle near Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar entered its second day on Sunday as intermittent firing raged through the morning.

Sources say two militants, who attacked and killed a CRPF subs-inspector Saturday evening in that area, are believed to trapped in the area surrounding the Delhi Public School, Srinagar.

It is not clear as of now if the militants are trapped inside the school campus or in an adjoining building.

Officials said that on Saturday evening militants opened fire on a vehicle of CRPF when a road opening party was passing at Pantha Chowk. A CRPF officer was killed and another trooper wounded.

Also on Saturday, a policeman and a CRPF jawan was injured when a policeman’s rifle went off accidentally the rifle as senior superintendent of police Srinagar Imtiyaz Parray was addressing the media in Srinagar.
