One person was killed after the roof of a Bank of Maharashtra branch in Karmala, Solapur district collapsed on Wednesday. At least 26 people were also rescued from the site of roof collapse in the bank premises. Heavy rainfall in the region claimed one life and at least 20 were injured.
According to the police officials of Karmala, the incident took place around 11.30 am on Wednesday morning when the bank was serving customers. The surroundings of the building had been damaged by heavy rains in the past one week.
“Around 26-30 people were inside the bank when a slab collapsed. We managed to rescue 10 of the injured people immediately and shift them to a hospital in Solapur. Later, seven more people were admitted to the hospital,” Shrikant Padule, police inspector of Karmala police station said.
While the bank’s branch was operated out of ground floor, the building also housed a clinic on the first floor, which also caved in after the slab slumped.
By evening, all the people trapped in the debris were pulled out.
Padule said the deceased was identified as Prashant Bagal, 35, a resident of Bhosare village in Madha tehsil who was standing near the cash counter when the accident happened. Bagal was working as a clerk in a local college.
