Parliament winter session Highlights: Lok Sabha speaker suspends four AIADMK, TDP MPs for disrupting proceedings

Chaotic scenes were witnessed in the lower house of Parliament on Monday as the government and the Opposition sparred over the Rafale deal.During the Lok Sabha proceedings, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman the doubts raised by the Congress over her statement on HAL contracts as “incorrect and misleading”.In a brief statement in Lok Sabha, she said that over ₹26,000 crore worth of contracts have been awarded and work amounting to ₹73,000 crore are in the pipeline.The Lok Sabha was repeatedly adjourned on Monday following protests by Congress, SP and other parties over various issues The House could not proceed with the Question Hour as there was pandemonium and the Speaker adjourned it till noon. The situation was no different when the House resumed and Mahajan issued a warning and suspended the four members of both the parties including AIADMK leader P. Venugopal and TDP’s N. After witnessing repeated disruptions, the lower house of the Parliament Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.

However, before being adjourned for the day, the House passed The Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018.

LS Speaker suspends four AIADMK, TDP MPs on Monday

“You have come to the well of the House and you are abusing the rules by persistently and wilfully obstructing the business. By your wilful and persistent obstruction, grave disorder is being occasioned. I am, therefore, constrained to name you under Rule 374A.

“Therefore, all of them stand automatically suspended from the service of the House for two consecutive sittings of the session under provision of Rule 374A. They may forthwith withdraw from the precincts of the House,” she said.

Sitharaman didn’t answer my questions: Rahul Gandhi

“Today Nirmal Sitharaman lied in parliament.I’m again requesting the defence minister and PM Modi to answer ‘did Air Force and Defence ministry senior officers object to your interference in Rafael deal?’ Please answer in a ‘Yes or No’,” said Rahul Gandhi.

“Congress is trying to protect HAL and will not allow ₹30,000 crores of people’s money to be given to Ambani, alleges Rahul,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Sitharaman said the doubts raised about her Parliament statement on HAL were “incorrect” and “misleading” and produced documents to show that contracts worth Rs. 26,570 crore have been signed with the HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and more orders worth Rs. 73,000 crore were in the pipeline for it.

Naramalli Sivaprasad, known for sporting different costumes in the House, was dressed like former Tamil Nadu chief minister M G Ramachandran and held a whip in his hand. During Question Hour, he walked into the Well and sought to flog himself.

As members from other parties continued with their protests, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till noon.

At the time the Speaker was adjourning proceedings, Sivaprasad switched on an audio device that played a famous Tamil film song of MGR, who was also a cine actor.

‘Doubts raised on my statement on HAL contracts misleading’: Sitharaman

“Doubts raised on my statement on HAL contracts are incorrect and misleading,” said defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.

“I have received confirmation from HAL that contracts during 2014-18 worth ₹26,570.80 crore have already been signed with HAL. Orders worth ₹73,000 Cr approx are in the pipeline,” she added.
