At least 36 Indian students died in violent attacks abroad between 2018 and 2025, with Canada accounting for the highest number at 17, followed by the US (9), Australia (3), Kyrgyzstan (2), and one each in the UK, China, Denmark, Germany and Grenada, the government informed Parliament on Friday. The country-wise data was shared by the minister of state in the ministry of external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written response to a query raised by Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

The government informed it has undertaken large-scale evacuation operations during emergencies to protect Indian nationals, including students. These included Operation Devi Shakti (Afghanistan), Operation Ganga (Ukraine), Operation Kaveri (Sudan), Operation Ajay (Israel) and Operation Sindhu (Israel and Iran).
“During emergencies, Government of India has undertaken large-scale evacuation operations to protect and bring home Indian nationals, including students,” the minister said, adding that these efforts demonstrate Government of India’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian students abroad and towards protecting them from miscreants and unsafe security situations.
