Two CRPF jawans on poll duty killed in firing by colleague in Gujarat

These jawans belong to a CRPF battalion from Manipur. They were sent here by the Election Commission ahead of the next month's Gujarat Assembly elections, said Porbandar Collector and District Election Officer, AM Sharma.

Two jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed while two others were injured after a colleague opened fire following an argument with them on Saturday evening in a village near Porbandar in Gujarat where they were stationed on election duty for next month's Gujarat Assembly elections, officials told news agency PTI.

The CRPF personnel were staying inside a cyclone centre in Tukda Gosa village, about 25 km from Porbandar.

The paramilitary jawans belonged to a CRPF battalion from Manipur. They were sent on poll duty by the Election Commission, Porbandar Collector and District Election Officer AM Sharma told the agency.

“A jawan opened fire from his assault rifle on his colleagues over some unknown issue on Saturday evening. While two jawans died on the spot, two others were injured. They were shifted to a hospital in Jamnagar. One of them received a bullet injury in his stomach and the other was hit on his leg,” Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI. He said that further investigation will be carried out by the police.

Porbandar goes for voting in the first phase of the election. Gujarat will vote in two phases on December 1 and 5, and the results will be declared on December 8.
