Two more allegedly commit suicide in Maharashtra over Maratha reservation demand
Several people have killed themselves in the last few days during the agitation by the politically influential Maratha community, which is seeking 16% quota in government jobs and education.
Two more people, including an unemployed man and a woman, allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region over the Maratha reservation issue in the last 24 hours, police said, taking the total number of such deaths to seven in the state.

Maratha Kranti Morcha has claimed 15 people have died over the reservation issue so far on their official Twitter handle @RtMaratha.
Umesh Indait, a 22-year-old graduate, was found hanging from the ceiling at his house in Chaudhari Colony of Aurangabad city. Police said Indait, who was living with his parents, has left a suicide note.
Aurangabad police commissioner Chiranjeev Prasad confirmed Indait’s death.
“This is sad. The youth was only 22. In his suicide note, he has apologised to his parents for failing to fulfil their dreams despite being educated by them,” said Prasad.
The commissioner added that Indait questioned in the note whether the reason for not getting a job was because he belonged to the Maratha community.
A 20-year-old woman from Osmanabad district of the same Marathwada region also killed herself on Thursday. Trushna Mane’s parents claimed she committed suicide in solidarity with the community’s ongoing demand for reservation.
They have submitted a statement to the police in this matter.
Osmanabad’s superintendent of police R Raja confirmed that Mane’s parents have claimed that the reason behind her suicide was Maratha reservation.
“We are investigating the case. It will be too early for us to come to any conclusion,” Raja said.
