Margaret Allen Stone, an American woman who was on a trekking expedition and was stranded near Leh since September 6 due to an injury, has been rescued by the Indian Air Force (IAF), an official said.

Stone was rescued on Tuesday from Zhingchan area in Ladakh and taken to a hospital in Leh, said senior superintendent of police Udaya Bhaskar Billa.

Zhingchan is at a distance of 75km from Leh.

The US citizen is recuperating at the hospital and the district administration will ensure her safe return to her country, the SSP told HT over phone from Leh.

On Tuesday, the US embassy had approached the IAF via the defence ministry to help locate Stone.

Responding to the distress call from the US embassy, the IAF traced Stone with help from the civil administration, said the SSP.
