Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif joined a chorus of voices speaking out against the mob violence in Basirhat in West Bengal, condemning those who damaged property and went on a rampage in the name of the Prophet.
A Muslim mob went on a rampage on July 2, burning shops in Basirhat region over a controversial Facebook post by a 17-year-old school boy, allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammad. The boy was arrested by police, but communal clashes continued through the week, till relative calm was restored on Friday.
Kaif tweeted that the Prophet was “too great” to be defended against a Facebook post and the ensuing mob violence was against his teachings.
Kaif’s tweet garnered over 5,000 retweets and more than 13,000 favourited it in less than 24 hours. While the former cricketer, who had a stint as a politician, faced some trolling, most Twitter users praised his statement.
