On Thursday the State Government claimed from April to September this year the number of beneficiaries exceeded 1.25 lakh.

From August 2005 to March 31 this year as many as 68,252 women benefited from the scheme, an official release said. In the last six months the performance of Khandwa, Ashoknagar, Narsinghpur, Balaghat and Ratlam districts has been excellent whereas remaining 37 districts have achieved their respective targets.

With a view to lowering the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR), and encouraging institutional deliveries two schemes are being implemented in the State.

These are Janani Suraksha Yojana and free transportation and treatment scheme for institutional deliveries. The state Government sponsors these schemes.

It may be mentioned here that to benefit maximum women under Janani Suraksha Yojana various conditions have been relaxed for treatment of expectant mothers of BPL families in Government hospitals.
