Area residents saw the infant’s body stuck to the iron grille of the five-foot-wide sewage drain. The police later fished out the minor's body.

“We have to ascertain whether the girl died after she was thrown into the drain or was already dead. Police have sent her body for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. Whatever may be the reason, the act is inhuman,” senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prashant Kumar said.

The incident comes two days after a father and an uncle of a one-and-half-month-old girl tried to bury her alive in the Rampura area of Pilkhuwa in neighbouring Panchsheel Nagar district.

The two men were later booked on attempt to murder charges. They apparently wanted to bury the girl in the hope of a healthy male child in the future and also for bringing prosperity. The act was allegedly done on the advice of a tantrik who is presently absconding.
