At least one person was killed and 17 injured, one of them in police firing, and curfew imposed in a locality of Vadodara as violence broke out on Sunday during Assembly election victory marches by BJP activists in three places of Gujarat.
A BJP worker was killed and four were seriously injured when a procession by saffron party activists came under attack allegedly by Congress supporters in minority-dominated Jangleshwar area of Rajkot district, police sources said.
The procession was taken to celebrate the victory of BJP MLA Tapu Bhai Limbasia.
At least 12 people were injured as rival groups clashed during the victory procession of BJP MLA Yogesh Patel in sensitive Raopura locality of Vadodara city, prompting authorities to clamp an indefinite curfew in the area.
Police fired to disengage the groups which indulged in heavy stone-pelting after explosion of teargas shells failed to bring the situation under control.
Trouble erupted when Patel's victory procession passed through Kharchikarwada and Macchipeeth, following which ten persons were wounded in stone-throwing and one each in police firing and stabbing, police said. A shop was torched by the mob.
In Ahmedabad, police lobbed teargas shells to quell two groups indulging in stone throwing during a victory procession of BJP MLA Bharat Barot at sensitive Dariapur area here.
One person was reported to be seriously injured in the incident, police sources said.
