Iraqi security forces have been conducting a major search for the kidnappers since the hostages were seized on Saturday.
Latifiya is in an area south of Baghdad known as the "Triangle of Death" because of a spate of attacks blamed on Sunni insurgents who frequently attack Shi'ites on their way from the capital to the holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala to the south, as well as US forces in the area and Shi'ite residents.
