Nearly 50,000 people were reeling under the impact of floods in Bihar as major rivers including Ganga, Burhi Gandak and Bagmati have inundated more than 100 villages in several districts following heavy rains.
Swirling waters of Bagmati, Kamalabalan and Mahananda rivers have submerged the national highway near Aurai in Muzaffarpur district and Runni Saidpur in Sitamarhi district, flooding dozens of villages.
Bagmati and Lakhandai rivers have inundated fresh areas in Muzaffarpur district since Wednesday due to heavy rains in their catchment areas.
Around 100 villages were affected by floods in Bhagalpur district, where river Ganga and its tributaries continued to wreak havoc submerging the national highway near Purmuhan, official sources said in Patna on Thursday.
Road communication between sub-divisional town Kahalgaon, where an NTPC plant is situated, and the district headquarters is disrupted since Wednesday, the sources said.
A pontoon bridge near Purmuhan also collapsed due to strong currents of Gerua river.
The situation was likely to aggravate in East and West Champaran districts where several rivers including Burhi Gandak continued to rise after heavy rains, they said.
