The vehicle tumbled into a deep ravine near Batgram, a market town about 160 kms northeast of the provincial capital, Peshawar, local police official Mohammed Anjum said.

Rescuers pulled 11 bodies from the ravine and the injured were taken to hospital, he said.

Pickup trucks and jeeps are often used as public transport in the rugged mountainous region and can be crowded when traveling to or from remote villages.

Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan and many are blamed on widespread disregard for traffic rules and poorly maintained roads.
