11 drown near Rameswaram in boat capsize

Eleven persons, including four women, were drowned when their boat heading towards Mulli Theevu island in the Gulf of Mannar off Periyapattinam coast capsized on Sunday, police said.

Eleven persons, including four women, were drowned when their boat heading towards Mulli Theevu island in the Gulf of Mannar off Periyapattinam coast capsized on Sunday, police said.

The Coastguard, Naval and Tamil Nadu Marine Police rescued 17 persons and brought them in an unconscious state to Pamban, near Rameswaram.

Seven bodies, including those of four women, was recovered, police said.

The victims, all from the Muslim fishermen colony of Periyapattinam village in the district, were on a picnic to Appa Theevu and Mulli Theevu islands when the tragedy occurred.

The people from the village had proceeded in two boats, one of which capsized, Marine Police DSP Thiragarajan said.
