19 students fined Rs 50,000 each for ragging juniors

The institute has also withdrawn scholarships awarded to students who have been accused of ragging.

On the night of July 19, IIIT-A authorities caught second-year B.Tech students ragging and harassing first-year students in the hostel.

On the basis of Supreme Court guidelines, the authorities have imposed fines of Rs 50,000 each on the students, which they have to deposit by August 14.

The guidelines came following the death of Amann Satya Kachroo, a first year MBBS student at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Himachal Pradesh, who faced physical torture in the name of ragging.

This was followed by several other cases across the country of deaths, suicides and attempted suicides by students facing ragging.

The Supreme Court had on May 8 ordered states across the country to set up anti-ragging committees. It said every college should have a psychiatrist to counsel students who indulge in ragging.

Dr Shveta Singh, warden of the IIIT-A girls hostel’ probed the incident and reported the matter to director MD Tiwari.

“Our inquiry has found 19 students guilty of harassing newcomers in spite of regular warnings through mails, notices and personal instructions at the time of orientation,” Tiwari told Hindustan Times.
