Two young Kashmiri architects have been selected by the France-based International Centre for Monuments and Sites for internship in conservation of heritage in the US.
"Architect Jabeen Manzoor has been assigned to Hillier's Conservation Group, Pennsylvania for three months to document the practices of conservation of American built heritage while, architect Abid Khan has been assigned with Charleston Heritage Foundation, South Carolina for studying the principles of cultural tourism," Saleem Beg, state convener of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Tourism (INTACH) said.
Beg said both these architects are working with INTACH Jammu and Kashmir chapter as conservation architects.
"It is for the first time that they have offered two fellowships to India. Normally, they select only one architect from India each year," Beg said adding the architects had to go through a tough selection process.
Beg attributed this special consideration for Kashmir to the monumental work done by the state chapter of INTACH in heritage resource mapping of the Srinagar. On the basis of this documentation, Srinagar was declared as first city among the list of seven heritage cites of India, he said.
He said the training in the US would enhance the skills of the duo in the field of conservation of vernacular architecture.
The architects would, during their fellowship in the US, make presentations on the rich Islamic heritage of Kashmir, he added.
