The train ploughed through a herd of cattle which was crossing the railway track near Laxmannath road at around 3 pm on Sunday afternoon, GRP sources said.
Following the accident, local people who lost their cows, squatted on the track disrupting train movement on the Kharagpur-Balasore section of south eastern railway.
Sources said several trains had been halted at different stations due to the protest by villagers.
A team of district police had been dispatched to the spot to clear the railway line.
