Yusuf Sheikh, a drug addict who was into rehab, then hanged himself from a ceiling fan, the police said.

“Yusuf was a drug addict and his brother Ashfaque (37) was trying to rehabilitate him. He had kept Yusuf away from drugs for the last 15 days,” said Sub-Inspector A.P. Pednekar, Mumbra police station.

On Monday morning, Ashfaque’s daughter Gulafsha saw Yusuf eating uncooked rice and asked him about it. Yusuf lost his temper, grabbed a knife and stabbed her thrice on the chest, stomach and thigh, the police said.

“Gulafsha’s grandmother Attarbi and nine-year-old sister Rukhsar tried to stop him. Ashfaque, who was sleeping in another room, woke up hearing the commotion and rushed her to Rehmania hospital,” said Pednekar.

Gulafsha was declared dead before admission.

When the family members returned home, they saw Yusuf hanging from the ceiling fan.

The family had returned from Muscat last month, where they have a business of repairing and selling air-conditioners.

Gulafsha’s parents had separated three years ago.

Her mother Sophia Parveen (35) blamed Ashfaque for the death of Gulafsha — the eldest of their three children — saying he didn’t take care of her.
