Preliminary reports suggest that militants barged into the house Ghulam Nabi Mir, a sarpanch from Batgund village associated with ruling National Conference, and shot him. His son was also killed in the firing.

In another incident in the same area, gunman fired upon Muhammad Anwer, a village head, of Amler village in Tral and killed him. He was said to close to the Congress.

Security forces have launched a manhunt in these areas.

This is fourth such attack in south Kashmir in the past one week. Militants killed two cops and Peoples Democratic Party Sarpanch.

It seems militants want to scare mainstream leaders and their supporters ahead of the polls. Anantnag is going on polls on April 24.
