Professional colleges will now be affiliated to individual universities that will specially cater to those particular streams.
The state government has announced that the three universities — law, technology and fine arts — will enhance focus and standardise curriculum and teaching in these streams.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has favoured the proposal, but the Cabinet is yet to give its nod.
“Different universities in the state follow different curriculums. If we introduce one university for all engineering colleges, the curriculum also will be standardised and be updated from time to time,” said Rajesh Tope, minister of higher and technical education.
All management, engineering and pharmacy colleges will be affiliated to the technology university, which is likely to be set up in Aurangabad.
The universities will be set up in two phases. In Phase I, the universities will deal with affiliation, curriculum and setting up of board of studies and academic council. In the second, they will impart education.
The state is also considering scrapping the medical Common Entrance Test (CET) because instead of focusing on Class 12 exams, students concentrate on the CET.
“The proposal mentions that students from urban areas manage to get into coaching classes and hence score over rural students. Also, other boards tend to fare better,” said WB Tayade, Director Medical Education and Research.
