IN A gruesome incident, a couple and their two children were hacked to death in Mohanlalganj on Monday. The assailants also shot at the couple to ensure there were no survivors.
A relative of the family reported the incident to the police in the morning. The dead included Pampal Singh (55), his wife Meena (50), son Pawan (22) and daughter Jyoti (13). The family, which had shifted to Gautamkhera village here from Chandigarh a year back, was involved in contractual farming. Senior cops, including the DIG and the SSP, rushed to the spot but nobody seemed to have any clue as to what could be the reason behind such brutal killings. On Monday morning, Bhagat Singh, Pampal’s brother in law who lives close by, visited their residence only to find the entire family lying brutally murdered. Pampal’s wife Meena and son Pawan’s bodies were lying outside the hut. Inside, Pampal and daughter Jyoti’s bodies were found. Jyoti was hacked beyond recognition. Pampal, Bhagat said, was a native of Sarsa district in Bihar.
Villagers said Pampal was a simple man whose behaviour with the people was excellent. Police have interrogated some of Pampal’s relatives at Telibagh.

{{/usCountry}}Meanwhile, the police’s move to draw up a list of outsiders settled here in connection with Monday’s mass murder sprang some surprises for the cops about Mohanlalganj and its past history. In 2000 and 2002 too, Mohanlalganj was rocked by mass murders. Here too, those murdered had only recently moved in. On May 16, 2000, six members of a Sikh family were murdered in Dhodhankhera—Usarbarauli village.
Those murdered—Indrajit Singh, his wife Sukhwinder, father Kashmir Singh, daughter Saranjit Kaur, uncle Avatar Singh and his wife Gurmeet Singhh—had moved into Mohanlalganj about an year before their murder. The main accused in the case—Ladi—is still at large. Again, on July 14, 2002 in South City, KP Shah, 45, his wife Sudha and their children, Nikki and Deepti were clubbed to death. In Jabrauli, last year two persons were murdered.
