The 28-year-old homoeopath suffered critical injuries while son Sarthak’s head was smashed with a hammer at their Rajnagar residence.

“Deepti’s vital organs have suffered damage. She has injuries in the abdomen and arms and is critical as the stab wounds are deep,” said Dr Atul Aggarwal, the attending surgeon.

Police have ruled out a break-in or robbery as the doors were locked from inside and no valuables were missing. “There is no possibility that an outsider came inside the house,” said SP (City) Anant Dev. “Dr Rajesh (Deepti’s husband) told us he had to break open the door of his residence to enter,” he added.

Police are still clueless about the motive. “Doctors say it may take her 24 more hours to recover. She holds the key to the murder,” Dev said.

“I never saw the couple argue. When I left around 3.30 pm Sarthak’s mother was helping him with his studies,” said housemaid Laxmi Devi.
