A study conducted under the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project has proposed a 48MLD (million litres per day) of water treatment plant for the Pithampur industrial area as part of an early bird project for the development of Pithampur-Mhow-Dhar investment node. The objective of the feasibility study is to formulate a detailed concept plan pertaining to water supply and wastewater management system of Pithampur industrial area looking at the future needs.
To put the proposed capacity of water treatment plant in perspective, 48MLD (480 lakh litres daily) will satisfy the need of about 1,000 industries, as on an average a medium-sized industry needs about 50,000 litres of water per day. At present, there are 650 industries in Pithampur industrial area including small industries that require less than 10,000 litres of water daily.
Currently, there are two water treatment plants (WTP) each of 9MLD capacity in Chandrapura and Tarpura and an additional WTP (9 MLD) in special economic zone (SEZ) phase 2. There is no system of wastewater conveyance and the effluent generating units have not been clustered together, says the report prepared by a consultant appointed by the DMIC Development Corporation.
"Apart from the water treatment plant, what the industrial area needs is an efficient pumping and pipeline network," Pithampur Industry Association president Gautam Kothari said. To meet the future water needs of the industrial area, the study has also proposed water supply from Mahi Dam, which has a total capacity of 90MLD. The length of the water transmission main from Mahi Dam to Pithampur is about 128km. The study has suggested different options to meet the industrial and domestic demand for water. Sources, however, said that Mahi Dam's only 20MLD water would be available for supply to Pithampur industrial area, at least during the initial years of the project.
