Five persons were on Saturday arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in an orchard in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The persons were arrested from Langate area of Kupwara on Saturday morning in connection with the rape and murder of Tabinda Jan, a student of class eight, whose body was found in an orchard between Batapora and Langate on Friday evening, Superintendent of Police, Handwara, Haseeb Mughal told PTI.
Mughal said the victim had been raped before being murdered by slitting her throat. Jan's murder sparked off a massive demonstration in the town.
She was apparently waylaid by some persons while she was returning home in Langate and later killed in a 'brutal manner. Torture marks were visible on her body.
Police have announced a reward of Rs 50,000 to those providing information regarding the murder of the girl.
