Five persons, suspected to belong to an Islamic fundamentalist outfit and arrested in Guwahati on Sunday, had visited the famed Kamakhya temple twice since their arrival from New Delhi, a senior police official said on Tuesday.
They had visited the temple assuming Hindu names and even offered prayers, the five revealed during interrogations, officials said.
"They could not explain why being Muslims they visited the temple. They are giving confusing and contradictory statements possibly to hoodwink us," the official said.
Several documents were also recovered from their possession and it is suspected that they had duped several people by promising them jobs in the army.
The five, who were picked up from two hotels in Paltanbazaar area near Guwahati railway station, have been identified as 60 year old Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Md Shahubbdin, Mir Issa Haque, Sheikh Ashraf Tarafdar and Md Hasmat Raza.
Their arrest was significant in view of intelligence reports that an Islamic fundamentalist group was planning to attack the Guwahati railway station.
