NEARLY 500 residents of CP Shekhar Nagar slums adjoining Khan River in were evacuated as a precautionary measure after heavy overnight rains partially inundated 50 dwellings.
The evacuees have been shifted to Gautam Nagar Government School and Mangal Sadan in Aada Bazaar. Rescue teams consisting of home guards armed with life jackets and nylon ropes have been deployed at the site.
Last night’s downpour caused a majority of the nullahs to overflow inundating scores of low-lying areas in various parts of Indore. Incessant rains threw normal life completely out of gear with bus services to many areas being disrupted.
Water logging was particularly severe in Veer Savarkar Nagar near Juni Indore railway crossing, Govind Nagar, Dheeraj Nagar and Patel Nagar on the Khajrana stretch of Ring Road with knee-deep water collecting in all these areas.
Flooding reports also came in from Kalyan Mill area, Vikas Nagar, Tapu Nagar, Amar Tekri and Goma ki Fel localities. In all nearly 3 inches of rainfall was recorded during the night.
By morning, the unabated downpour looked set to put the Khan River in spate threatening the slum settlements that ring the natural storm water drain. Meanwhile, flooding reports streamed in from all parts of the City. More than half-a-dozen localities near Velocity Cinema were inundated.

As soon as news spread that the siphons were running, a large numbers of picnickers descended at the reservoir to bathe in the fine spray. “Six siphons started functioning today but two were later shut down. In effect, four large and twenty-five small siphons are currently operational,” said Waterworks incharge Munnalal Yadav.
