IT WAS strange but not totally unexpected that the beneficiaries of Rs 20,000 awarded under Kanya Vidyadhan Scheme failed to answer the simple question of Divisional Commissioner Dr Moolchand Yadav as to how they would express their thanks to the chief minister for the cheques.
The division commissioner was the chief guest at Government Jubilee Inter College where around 515 girls were given the cheques.
After handing over the cheques, Yadav asked a few questions about how they were feeling after receiving the cheques.
Most of the girls replied that it was a very pleasant feeling but when Yadav asked how they would express their gratitude to the chief minister, the girls remained silent and failed to answer, though joint director education Amarnath Verma and district inspector of school Ramagya Kumar prompted the girls.
Later, District Magistrate Dr Hariom, who was also present in the programme, told the girls how to express their thanks to the chief minister. Then the girls said they would spend the amount for continuing their education. However, the divisional commissioner was not pleased at the poor performance of the girls and said he thought most of the girls had passed the examination through copying.
So far, 1108 girls who have passed intermediate have been awarded cheques and the State government has provided Rs 13.50 crore to the district for the Kanya Vidyadhan scheme. Moolchand Yadav said Uttar Pradesh was the first State where such a programme had been started to promote women’s education and it was the third year of launching the scheme.
