"The incident took place this morning at around 10:30 am when six gangmen working on a track were run over by Sarnath Express train", SP Chitrakoot DK Rai told PTI over phone.

Over a dozen gangmen working on a track moved to a nearby track as a goods train was coming on it from opposite direction, however they were not aware that another train was coming on their present place of work and got hit by Sarnath Express, a railway official said.

"The gangmen were not aware that the trains were coming on both the tracks due to which the incident took place," the official said.

Those killed have been identified as Icchalal, Shivnaresh Shobhalal, Boghelal, Ram Gareeb and Bhagwandeen.

Three senior officials would conduct the inquiry and probe into lapses, if any, Bajpai said adding "an exgratia of Rs 15 thousand would be given to the family of the victims.
