About 60 families were rendered homeless as their houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Kanpura village in Orissa's Dhenkanal district today, police said.

Five fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the blaze but the cause of the fire was not clear.

District collector Girish SN along with other officials went to the village to oversee relief operation.

"The administration has opened free kitchen and provided utensils to the affected families," the collector said adding that house building assistance would be given according to relief code.
