Six of the deceased had gone to Karad in Satara district to attend a wedding. So strong was the impact of the collision that the wheels of the car came off.

“The driver was speeding. He seems to have crashed into a heavy vehicle. While seven people were killed on the spot, three, including the driver, have been injured,” said KT Vidhate, senior inspector, Kalamboli police station. “The survivors told us that the driver was feeling sleepy and they had asked him to drive carefully.”

The police have arrested the driver and booked him on charges of rash and negligent driving causing death. He will be presented in court on Tuesday.
